HPAI H5N1 viruses replicated to high titers in hCOs, but replication of the seasonal influenza A virus was not detected. Viral antigen and RNA were detected primarily in neuron- and astrocyte-like cells. Interferon responses to infection with HPAI H5N1 viruses were observed in a small population of bystander cells. Higher levels of cell death and proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines were observed in organoids inoculated with the historical HPAI H5N1 isolate.
Cardiovascular Events 1 Year After Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in Adults
In this cohort study in 17,494 matched patients with and without RSV infection, RSV infection was associated with 4.69 additional cardiovascular events for every 100 older individuals with infection in the year following RSV infection. Over the observed 365 days, 665 any cardiovascular events had occurred among 8747 individuals with RSV infection and 257 among 8747 individuals without infection. That was a total of 922 cardiovascular events with over 70% attributable to the RSV infection.
Long-Term Illness in Adults Hospitalized for Respiratory Syncytial Virus Disease, United States, February 2022-September 2023
Authors surveyed adults (>18 years of age) who survived hospitalization for RSV or COVID-19 during February 2022-September 2023 about physical functioning and quality of life; surveys were conducted 6-12 months after hospitalization. They compared outcomes after RSV hospitalization by age (<60 vs. >60 years) and to those hospitalized for COVID-19 by using multivariable regression models. Among 146 adults hospitalized with RSV, 27.4% reported severe breathlessness and 21.9% poor quality of life at follow-up. Few differences were seen in posthospital illness by age. After adjustment, participants with RSV had 1.81 (95% CI 1.08-3.04) times increased odds of worse dyspnea than did those with COVID-19. Participants reported functional and quality of life impairments after RSV hospitalization, regardless of age, and a postdischarge sequelae constellation similar to that for those hospitalized for COVID-19.
Effectiveness of the Maternal RSVpreF vaccine Against Severe Disease in Infants in Scotland, UK: A National, Population-based Case-control Study and Cohort Analysis
These are the results of a retrospective, nested case-control study with a cohort sensitivity analysis. The source population comprised all singleton livebirths in Scotland between Aug 12, 2024, and March 31, 2025, as recorded in the Scottish Linked Pregnancy and Baby Dataset (SLiPBD). During the study period, 27, 565 singleton livebirths were recorded in the SLiPBD. 13,842 (50·2%) of the 27,565 pregnant women received the RSVpreF vaccine, 12 747 (92·1%) of whom were vaccinated more than 14 days before delivery. 354 infants aged 90 days or younger had an RSV-related LRTI hospital admission during the study period (cases). Adjusted vaccine effectiveness against RSV-associated LRTI hospital admission was 82·2% (95% CI 75·1-87·3; p<0·0001) in vaccinated infants compared with unvaccinated infants, which translated to 219 (95% CI 189-243) RSV-related LRTI hospital admissions averted during the study period.
Effectiveness of Nirsevimab in Preventing Respiratory Syncytial Virus-related Burden: A Test-negative Case-control Study in Infants With Bronchiolitis in Lombardy Region, Italy
This single-center study provides an estimation of the nirsevimab effectiveness in infants after its recent introduction in Italy (82% in preventing RSV infection, 78% in preventing RSV-associated hospitalization, and of 84% in preventing PICU admission).In conclusion, authors state that findings provide early real-world evidence that nirsevimab is highly effective in preventing RSV-burden during its first season of use in Italy. They performed a cohort study that used data from the French National Health Data System for all individuals in the French population aged 18 to 59 years who were alive on November 1, 2021. A total of 22,767,546 vaccinated and 5,932,443 unvaccinated individuals were followed up for a median (IQR) of 45 (44-46) months. Vaccinated individuals were older than unvaccinated individuals (mean [SD] age, 38.0 [11.8] years vs 37.1 [11.4] years), more frequently women (11,688,603 [51.3%] vs 2,876,039 [48.5%]) and had more cardiometabolic comorbidities (2,126,250 [9.3%] vs 464,596 [7.8%]). During follow-up, 98,429 (0.4%) and 32,662 (0.6%) all-cause deaths occurred in the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups, respectively. Vaccinated individuals had a 74% lower risk of death from severe COVID-19 (weighted hazard ratio [wHR], 0.26 [95% CI, 0.22-0.30]). Vaccinated individuals had a 25% lower risk of all-cause mortality (wHR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.75-0.76]), with a similar association observed when excluding severe COVID-19 death. Sensitivity analysis revealed that vaccinated individuals consistently had a lower risk of death, regardless of the cause. Mortality was 29% lower within 6 months following COVID-19 vaccination (relative incidence, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.69-0.73]).
Two-year Prognosis of mRNA Vaccine-related Myocarditis Compared with Historical Conventional Myocarditis: A Population-based Cohort Study
Extensive research has demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines in mitigating the impact of the pandemic. However, myocarditis remains a concerning potential adverse event following vaccination. Generally, the prognosis of postvaccine myocarditis has been reported as mild and self-limiting compared to other causes. However, certain symptoms and diagnostic abnormalities persist even after one year of follow-up. This study, with a follow-up period exceeding two years, aimed to explore the potential differences in prognostic outcomes between postvaccine myocarditis group and historical conventional myocarditis group. The retrospective cohort study was conducted by connecting routine healthcare records from the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong with vaccination records from the Department of Health. The final cohort included 912 patients: 109 with myocarditis following mRNA vaccination and 803 with historical conventional myocarditis. After adjustments with covariates, vaccination-related myocarditis cases presented a lower risk of all-cause death (aHR=0.22, 95%CI:0.09-0.62) within two-year follow-up. Patients with myocarditis after mRNA vaccination had a significantly decreased risk of heart failure (aHR=0.17, 95%CI:0.07-0.48) compared to those with conventional myocarditis. This is mixed news. Vaccine myocarditis is different and tends to be milder but in this series there were two deaths that they assessed were due to vaccination.

    Situation Dashboards

    <img decoding="async" data-src="https://b1663976.smushcdn.com/1663976/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype-300x89.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1" alt="World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype" title="World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype" itemprop="image" data-srcset="https://b1663976.smushcdn.com/1663976/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype-300x89.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1 300w, https://b1663976.smushcdn.com/1663976/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype-1024x302.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1 1024w, https://b1663976.smushcdn.com/1663976/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype-768x227.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1 768w, https://b1663976.smushcdn.com/1663976/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype-1536x453.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1 1536w, https://b1663976.smushcdn.com/1663976/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/World_Health_Organization_logo_logotype-2048x604.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1 2048w" data-sizes="auto" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==" class="lazyload" style="--smush-placeholder-width: 300px;
