“When I initially started with my weekly clinical updates, they were primarily a way to keep the more than 1,000 clinicians and staff at our organization up-to-date in the New York Tri-State Region,” explained Griffin, MD PhD CTropMed CTH, who serves as Chief of Infectious Disease for ProHealth NY and co-founded Parasites Without Borders, a global nonprofit that offers free, educational resources on parasitology to medical students and healthcare workers around the world. “As the amount of information and our audience grew, we expanded the podcasts to 30 minutes to cover the very focused, clinical updates that are deeper and longer scientific discussions characteristic of TWiV.”<\/p>\n
Along with “This Week in Virology” host, Vincent Racaniello PhD, Dr. Griffin explores COVID-19 topics, including transmission in K-12 schools, vaccine trials, symptom persistence in outpatients, the need for invasive mechanical ventilation, cytokine release syndrome, current status of vaccination in the United States, and clinical management of COVID-19 patients, among others.<\/p>\n
“My medical education was a critical tool in combating this pandemic from the foundation to the skills in evaluating new therapeutics that were being investigated,” explained Dr. Griffin. “While there was a daily challenge sorting through the tremendous flow of information about COVID, the rigorous scientific and medical training helped me to discern what therapeutics held the most promise for my patients. If nothing else, this pandemic has taught us how critical reliable, accessible scientific communication is in allowing people to separate what we have learned from speculation and
