For over nine years, a dedicated group of doctors has been working tirelessly to share their combined 200 years of experience in clinical parasitology with those who need it most through an array of free medical resources. Parasites Without Borders’ newest medical resource, ‘Despommier’s Parasitic Diseases, Eighth Edition,’ is now available as a free PDF download and for purchase as a paperback or Amazon Kindle digital book.
“This updated edition of ‘Parasitic Diseases’ has a new name that reflects the extreme gratitude and fondness we have for our friend, mentor, and colleague, Dr. Dickson Despommier,” says Dr. Daniel Griffin, co-founder of Parasites Without Borders. “Our hope is that ‘Despommier’s Parasitic Diseases’ helps clinicians, professors, students, and health professionals do exactly what Dickson, Charles, and I set out to do when we founded Parasites Without Borders - eliminating human suffering due to parasitic infections.”
When the late Dr. Dickson Despommier, Dr. Daniel Griffin, and Dr. Charles Knirsch founded Parasites Without Borders, their goal was to supplement global medical education resources, with the belief that through educating students, clinicians, and parasitologists and with vigilant commitment, they could improve the lives of hundreds of millions of less fortunate individuals by helping them live longer and lead more productive lives. Their foundational textbook, ‘Parasitic Diseases,’ has been distributed to over 100 countries, with more than 40,000 copies now in the hands of those who can effect change. And change is happening. Thanks to a multi-pronged approach by world leaders, public health organizations, policy makers, and countless of dedicated individuals, enormous strides have been made, with 56 countries eliminating at least one Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) and 600 million fewer people requiring interventions such as mass drug treatment or surgery for disabling disease morbidity since the first NTD elimination road map was released in 2010.
New features in ‘Despommier’s Parasitic Diseases, Eighth Edition’ include updates on the epidemiology of diseases, efforts underway to discover and develop new medicines and vaccines, and the status of disease management and elimination programs. The textbook also features a clinical summary section, over 400 full-color illustrations, more than 4,000 references, pathogen descriptions, life cycle diagrams drawn by John Karapelou, a pronunciation guide, epidemiology updates, lab diagnostic methods, a diagnostic atlas, prevention strategies, and a clinical appendix.
